lubes for menopause

PSA to all of our Beauties: menopause has some not-so-fun side effects. So here’s what you need to know about how to purchase nontoxic lubricants for menopause so you can get your groove back the organic way.

Every Woman Goes Through The Big M

And just like gray hair and fine lines, few women feel comfortable bringing it up in conversation.

It kind of reminds me of middle school when everyone was going through their first periods at the same time but would rather DIE than talk about it. I’m guilty of this myself.

I used to skip school on days I started my period because I was so afraid of bleeding through my pants…because I was embarrassed to ask to go to the bathroom…because I was afraid people would know I was on my period.

How absurd is that?!

So although it may feel like you’re experiencing menopause symptoms alone, you’re not—people just don’t like to talk about or acknowledge the fact that women’s bodies change.

But that’s just too bad. We’re talking about menopausal and postmenopausal women anyways, and if you don’t like it, then this article isn’t for you.

So there!

Our bodies are supposed to change, we’re designed that way, and it’s a privilege to hit each milestone along the way because it means you’ve been gifted with a nice, long life.

Admittedly, your sleep habits might change, and your skin might start to show signs of age, but your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Instead of feeling awkward about it, thank her for her service.

Beware Toxic Ingredients In Lubricants & Oils

Here’s the deal. Vaginal dryness and other menopause symptoms suck.

And it’s tempting to run to the nearest adult store and grab whatever solutions are on the shelf when you’re in the heat of the moment.

But not all lubricants are created equal, and we need to be mindful of what we’re using “down there.” Because you know what? Big corporations aren’t going to be very mindful for us!

Take tampons, for instance.

According to the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, tampons “…may contain traces of dioxin from bleach, pesticide residues from conventional, non-organic cotton, and mystery “fragrance” ingredients.”

I know what you’re thinking.

“Wouldn’t the FDA take tampons off the market if they were dangerous?”

Again, from the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics, “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that tampons are safe, and that they do not contain dangerous levels of dioxin. However, even trace levels of dioxins are concerning because these chemicals have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and endometriosis.”

Sorry to disappoint you, Beauties.

But the FDA aren’t exactly our knights in shining armor—they’re influenced by the same forces (politics and finances) that influence everything else in the world. The sad truth is this: very, very few companies are thinking about women’s health when they design products meant to go inside of us.

menopause lubricants

So it should come as no surprise that most off-the-shelf lubes are filled with straight up junk.

Sure, they might do the trick in the moment, but some researchers are worried about the potential long-term health effects they can bring. We’re talking products with pH levels that might not play nice with our vaginas, leading to some unpleasant bacterial vaginosis situations. No thanks!

Some of those lubes also have harsh chemicals that can mess with vaginal tissue and its microbiome. We want to feel good when we choose lubes for overcoming symptoms of menopause, not deal with discomfort, itching, and allergic reactions caused by toxic ingredients.

So, what’s a Beauty over 55 to do?

We need to be picky about the lubricants we use and make sure they’re gentle and safe for our precious lady bits. And that means choosing lubes created with organic, natural ingredients to support an overall nontoxic lifestyle.

How To Find Organic, Non-Toxic Lubricants and Oils

Start by knowing what you don’t want in your vaginal lubricants and oils. That will eliminate most of the products on the market and help you narrow down your choices.

There are three main types of lubricants:

1. Water-based lubricants

Water-based lubricants are a popular choice for many women due to their versatility and ease of use. These lubricants are formulated with water as the main ingredient, making them ideal to use with most sex toys and latex condoms.

The problem is that many of these lubricants include glycerin. Glycerin stops the water-based lubricant from evaporating, but it can also draw moisture out of your lady parts and irritate sensitive skin—not exactly what you want during an intimate encounter.

It also runs the risk of causing bacterial vaginosis or even urinary tract infections since glycerin is a byproduct of sugar. Plus, you have to re-apply water-based lubes of lubricant more frequently, which might ruin the moment.

2. Silicone-based lubricants

Silicone-based lubes contain silicone as their main ingredient, making them waterproof and ideal for use in the shower, bath, or pool. Silicone lubricants are also great for women with sensitive skin and allergies.

However, it’s crucial to avoid using silicone-based lubricants with silicone sex toys, as they may degrade the material over time. Additionally, they can be more challenging to clean off surfaces than water-based options.

3. Oil-based lubricants

Oil-based lubricants are formulated with natural oils like coconut oil, almond oil, or other plant-based oils. They’re often preferred by women seeking all-natural and chemical-free options.

Oil-based lubricants are safe to use with most sex toys, but avoid using them with latex condoms, as they can weaken the latex and lead to breakage. These lubricants may also require more effort to clean off the body and sheets due to their oily nature.

No matter which kind you pick, avoid these toxic ingredients commonly found in lubricants at all costs.

  • DMDM Hydantoin – This ingredient releases formaldehyde to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. It can cause irritation and allergic reactions, making it unsuitable for use in intimate products.
  • Petrochemicals (Propylene Glycol, Polyethylene Glycol, Petroleum) – Found in flavored and warming lubricants, petrochemicals are endocrine disruptors and have been linked to inflammation, rashes, and, perhaps most frightening of all, neurologic diseases.
  • Parabens – Often used to prolong shelf life, parabens can be absorbed by the body and may have carcinogenic properties.
  • Benzocaine – This numbing ingredient found in some lubricants may cause burning, stinging, itching, and allergic reactions. It’s commonly used in “anal play” to make sex less painful.

(Beauties—if you need to numb yourself for sex with your partner, then it’s not doing you any good either way, so why do it in the first place? We officially give you permission to be more selfish and set more boundaries in the bedroom if that’s what you need).
